At just 18, Charlotte joined IBM as a degree apprentice. Today, she’s presenting complex technical portfolios, shaping client solutions, and leading engagement for Manchester’s T-Level programme.

Discover her apprenticeship journey as she reflects on the moments that challenged her, surprised her, and helped her grow.

What initially motivated you to apply for an apprenticeship at IBM?

I’ve always been highly driven and work oriented. When I discovered a degree apprenticeship would let me get hands-on experience while studying in a field, I’m passionate about, it was an obvious choice. The ability to combine academic learning with real-world impact felt like the perfect fit for my ambitions.

How would you describe life at IBM and the kind of projects you’re currently involved in?

Since joining IBM, I’ve had the opportunity to work across several business units from Storage to Security and I’m now part of the Build team within IBM Technology. In my current role as a Build Technical Seller, I support clients by shaping technical solutions that align with their needs and strategic goals.

What has surprised you most about working at IBM so far?

One of the most surprising things I’ve achieved was whiteboarding the entire IBM Security technical portfolio to a business partner from scratch. I’ve never struggled with speaking to people, but presenting has always made me feel uncomfortable.  Stepping into that situation really pushed me out of my comfort zone and showed me how much knowledge I’ve built up.

Outside work, how do you get involved in IBM and your local community?

There’s so much to get involved in here in Manchester! I’ve become a volunteer, contributed to the office relocation project and I’m currently the Engagement Lead for the Manchester T‑Levels programme. Supporting young people joining IBM at 16 is something I’m truly proud of.

What has been a standout moment of your apprenticeship?

A standout moment for me was meeting Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and welcoming him into our office to discuss the importance of T-Levels. Being able to share firsthand how valuable these pathways are for developing young talent was a real highlight in my role.

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship at IBM?

Go for it. Apply. You never know where it might take you.
